With reference to my visit to the Volonial Office today to explain my position in relation to the Reachers' Superannuation Act recently passed by Parliament I beg to state that from 1885 to 1894 I was engaged in schools in Hong Song during 1885 - 6 as head- master of the Anglo Chinese, established by a committee of native merchants, and from 1887 to 1894 as an Assistant on the staff of Queen's College. In 1896 I
1896 I was invalided home in conséquence of a severe attack of malaria and in the following year resigned my position on the urgent advice of Dr. Canthie receiving a compassionate allowance of about $260; an amount in relation to my pay when on leave (2004, including personal allowance for knowledge of the brinese language) almost exactly equivalent to the lump sum now granted to teachers in addition to pension.
My residence in Hong Hong I now find precludes the possibility of my teaching in England for the qualifying period of thirty years under the new act and I ventibre to request chat as an act of Frace I may be granted by the government of the colours the proportion of my perision for the time I served there - probably about 30 per annum - otherwise I fear that I shall be devarred from participation in the benefits of the scheme
